Summary of tectonic development of Kalimantan and adjacent areas

Abstract: This paper presents a reconstruction of the tectonic development of Kalimantan and touches on neighboring areas, such as the South China Sea, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatera, Java, Sulawesi, and the Philippines. Pre-Late Triassic rocks occur in Kalimantan but their tectonic history is not clear. A Carboniferous-Permian arc is postulated. An important tectonic event for Kalimantan occurred in Late Triassic time during which Kalimantan was cratonized and stabilized by collision tectonic processes. This event can best be correlated with the Indo-Sinian orogeny which is known in peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. The Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary arc development produced granitic plutons in southwest Kalimantan thus further stabilizing south Kalimantan. Post-Late Triassic deposition is either platform cover or active marginal accretion. Platform cover occurred in central, south, and southeast Kalimantan. Marginal development took place to the north, east, and southward. The northern development of the Kalimantan portion of the platform ceased during Late Miocene time. Platform development to the south and east continues as indicated by volcanism in north Sulawesi, Mindanao, Sumatera/Java, and the Inner Banda Island Arc.
