Advanced separation techniques for petrochemicals

Abstract:
The higher cost of energy in recent years has resulted in a major effort to reduce energy requirements and costs associated with petrochemical separations. Key emphasis has been on distillation modification and on plant heat integration to achieve these ends. New separations techniques have principally had impact on gas separations where they will have increasing importance in the future. This article discusses heat integration in distillation, replacing distillation trays with packing, and improved distillation column controls. Separations with a liquid mass separating agent are also touched upon. Alternatives to distillation reviewed include gas separation membranes, gas adsorption, and acid gas absorption.
