Abstract:
The effect of high solar flux on the methanation catalytic reaction has been investigated. Irradiation of a polycrystalline foil nickel catalyst at a flux of 1.4 MW/m2 has resulted in a 100% increase in methane yield for the reaction. This high-flux photo-enhancement is believed to be due to photo-enhanced dissociation of CO molecules on the nickel catalyst surface. The observed photo-enhanced catalysis realizes a spectrally specific use of concentrated solar radiation.
