Abstract:
A model for optimal control of a heat-pump system with a storage tank is developed. The numerical solution is obtained by transforming the free boundary condition problem into one with fixed boundary conditions and solving for the optimal pattern of heat-pump control under varying ambient and source temperature distributions. The effects of source-temperature and mass storage on optimal cost are investigated and an approximate method of predicting energy savings is given. Simulation results suggest that, depending on the source-temperature, storage capacity and building load, significant energy savings can be made.
