Abstract: An accurate set of measurements is presented of solar absorptance (αs) for wavelengths (0.3–2.0 μm) and total hemispherical thermal emittance (εh) for i.r. wavelengths (3–30 μm) of some building elements. The αs values vary from 0.19 to 0.93 ± 0.02, depending upon the nature, colour and texture of materials. The εh values for most of the building elements are high and vary from 0.80 to 0.92 ± 0.02. Weathering, rusting, anodization and wetting of materials considerably increase their solar absorptance and total hemispherical thermal emittance.
