Digital control of a heating system for hot water and space heating

Abstract:
The design of control strategies for heating systems supplying hot water and space heating are explored. The control problem is modelled as consisting of 1.(i) two control loops (boiler and domestic hot water tank) and2.(ii) three control loops (boiler, domestic hot water and an environmental space). The problem with two control loops was solved by decoupling the model equations and designing two standard digital PI controllers, one for controlling the flow rate of natural gas to the boiler and the other for modulating the heat exchange between the boiler and the DHW tank. For the problem with three control loops, a feedback-control law has been designed to hold the boiler, domestic hot water and zone air temperatures at desired operating points. The control-law design is based on a multivariable pole-placement technique.
