HTGR fuel and fuel elements

A.S. Chernikov

Energy, 1991, vol. 16, issue 1, 263-274

Abstract: The state of the art for fuel and uranium-graphite fuel elements for HTGRs being developed in the USSR is described. The results of investigating the main characteristics of the spherical fuel element materials and components are reported. Included in the studies are: uranium dioxide microspheres, protective pyrocarbon and silicon carbide layers and coated fuel particles, and also matrix graphite. The results of calculations and experimental investigations of fuel elements construction at the stages of pre-reactor and in-reactor tests are represented. The achieved level of technical characteristics of the coated fuel particles and spherical fuel elements shows that they will retain their integrity under the operating conditions of the reactor core in the HTGR under construction.
