Abstract:
The unique passive safety characteristics of the HTGR calls for a different approach to research on the risk factors. The investigations address the efficiency of the physical mechanisms rather than the functioning of active safety systems. Experimental facilities and the priorities of current HTGR safety research are described. These include heat removal from the core by conduction and radiation, and the retention of fission products in the core by the fuel elements and the graphite matrix.
