Selection of ozone-safe refrigerants for heat pumps

Energy, 1993, vol. 18, issue 8, 867-870

Abstract: Criteria are described for selection of ozone-safe, high-performance working fluids for low- and high-temperature applications of heat pumps. Comparisons are made in terms of ecological and thermophysical properties for working substances which can be used without change of system designs. We conclude that R-134, R-134a, E-115, and possibly R-152a are promising alternatives to R-12 for low-temperature applications. Six refrigerants [E-134, 5FP, R-143, ethyl chloride (R-160), ethyl bromide, and propyl chloride] are promising refrigerants for replacing R-114 in high-temperature applications.
