Energy management scenarios in off-grid regions: Applications in Colombia, using the day-ahead mechanism

Abstract: This study evaluates energy management and planning in off-grid scenarios in Colombia, where populations face energy access deficits, with supply available for only a few hours each day. The main objective is to develop a tool for designing operational tariff structures that promote the efficient use of electricity. This research is fundamental because it conducts a scenario analysis of demand and price response based on a day-ahead transaction scheme and offers a structured approach through a four-block methodology: Energy Data, Generator Identifier, Case Studies, and Results Analysis. The methodology is enhanced with univariate sensitivity analysis and includes prosumer user behavior and an economic evaluation of the system. Additionally, it presents preferred options that reflect the uncertainty caused by the volatility of electricity market prices. The simulations propose off-grid scenarios with 100 % demand coverage, with a supply capacity of 1.6 MW/h for approximately 2221 users, estimating monthly coverage of 150 MWh and an average consumption of 70 kWh per user. The results highlight 100 % participation in photovoltaic generation, with an LCOE of 0.049 USD/kWh.
