Energy, 2025, vol. 314, issue C

Abstract: Bio-char possesses distinct physical and chemical properties, allowing for its direct use in combustion applications, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable development objectives. This study evaluates the combustion characteristics of bamboo bio-char using cone calorimetry. Prior to combustion characteristics, thermogravimetric analysis of bamboo bio-char is studied for determination of activation energy which gives insight about its bioenergy potential. Characterisation tests like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and Braunauer-Emmett-Teller of bamboo bio-char have also been studied to know about its physical and chemical characteristics. Higher rate of heat release (47.6 kWm−2) and effective heat of combustion (23.24 MJkg−1) along with lower CO (0.01015 kg/kg) and CO2 yields (0.006917 kg/kg) make bamboo bio-char a promising candidate for use as solid biofuel.
