Shifting to lower carbon emission for aircraft: An alternative fuel evaluation

Abstract: Recently, the aviation industry has shown interest in compressed natural gas (CNG), which has low emissions, high energy density and is more economical. This study aims to determine the energy and exergy sustainability, environmental and cost analyzes of a CNG-fueled turbofan engine. In the study, the turbofan engine, a simplified model of which is created, is mathematically analyzed in the EES (Engineering Equation Solver) program. When CNG was used in the turbofan engine, the specific fuel consumption decreased until 17.20 % (kerosene 39.8 kg/kN.h, CNG 32.9 kg/kN.h) compared to kerosene under the same conditions. Likewise, the energy efficiency of the turbofan engine increases by approximately 5.45 % (kerosene 41.5 %, CNG 43.7 %) when fed with CNG. The exergy destruction cost rate was determined as 7.790 kW/$0.10−3 for kerosene and 15.053 kW/$0.10−3 for CNG. The environmental impact effect, ecological effect factor, sustainable efficiency factor and exergy sustainability index of the turbofan engine are calculated as 2.633, 3.913, 1.343, 0.380 for kerosene and 2.252, 3.527, 1.396, 0.444 for CNG respectively. The carbon emissions of CNG-fueled turbofan engine are decreased by 20.18 % compared to kerosene.
