A comprehensive investigation of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) effects on energy distribution and emissions of a turbo-charging diesel engine under World Harmonized transient cycle

Abstract:
EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is usually used to recover part of exhaust energy and reduce NOx emission in diesel engine with the payments of combustion deterioration and cost increase. So, EGR's effects on energy efficiency and emissions must be comprehensively clarified. In the current study, totally 8 World Harmonized Transient Cycles were examined with considerations of thermal status and aftertreatment. Some important findings include: (1) Only 0.1 % difference in fuel consumption brought by EGR, it slightly increases thermal efficiency; (2) Raw HC and CO emission factors are increased by 70 % and ∼2 times by EGR because of combustion deterioration; (3) EGR makes NOx emission factor reduce from 8.1 g/kW.h to 4.1 g/kW.h, PM is decreased from 0.072 g/kW.h to 0.026 g/kW.h, EGR also lowers PN emission due to lower combustion temperature; (4) With aftertreatment, all emissions meet the regulation requirement. EGR lowers HC conversion efficiency from 98.2 % to 78.5 % but almost does not affect other pollutants conversions. The systematic and detailed results and discussions make this work can be expected to provide a contribution for cost and emission reduction of diesel engines.
