Capacity planning method for continuous flexible AC traction power supply system based on optimal power flow

Abstract: The continuous flexible AC traction power supply system is a promising alternative to promote the comprehensive utilization of the energy from the grid and the regenerative braking energy from the locomotives. The capacity planning problem for the system is significant in ensuring operational safety and making the system economical, but it has yet to be solved entirely. Therefore, this paper proposes a two-step capacity planning method based on the capability of full-line optimal power flow (OPF) operation due to controllable converters and available locomotive information, and the necessity of N-1 safety. The method obtains an initial capacity satisfying all constraints of N-1 scenarios in the first step, then adjusts the initial scheme with the objective of the total life cycle cost (LCC) of normal operation in the second step, finally obtains a capacity that satisfies N-1 requirement and improves the economy. Moreover, the benefits of the OPF strategy are discussed, and the results illustrate a 29 % reduction in capacity and a 27 % decrease in the LCC of the OPF strategy compared to those of the voltage-fixed strategy. In addition, the improved penalty CCP algorithm combined with the SOCP relaxation method is formed to seek an efficient solution.
