Oxygenated fuels in acetylene-diesel dual fuel engine: Enhancing performance and emission control

Abstract:
The present work investigates the influence of diethyl ether-butanol blending synergistic interaction on the performance-emission characteristics of acetylene-diesel dual fuel engines. It has been observed that ABDEE10 and ABBU10 exhibit an improved brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of about 1.66 % and 1.21 %, respectively, over neat diesel at 4 LPM acetylene induction due to improvements in combustion characteristics. Besides, NOx emission was very low in dual-fuel operation: up to 22 % and 27 % for ABDEE10 and ABBU10 blends respectively, one of the main problems for diesel engines. Besides, the CO emissions have also been brought down as low as 34 % and 37 % for ABDEE10 and ABBU10, respectively, signifying improvement in combustion efficiency. Smoke opacity decreased by 42 % for ABDEE10 and 38 % for ABBU10, which further supports the incorporation of oxygenated fuel due to its environmental benefits. This research underlines the potential of alternative fuels in causing revolutionary change toward much cleaner and efficient combustion in diesel engines and hence presents valuable information about sustainable fuel technologies. Hydrocarbon emission also showed a reduction of 27 % for ABDEE10 and 29 % for ABBU10 at the full load condition.
