Development of voltage stability-based bus dependency matrix for modern power networks

Abstract: Voltage Stability Analysis and Control (VSAC) is necessary for power systems. This necessity can be crucial with the increased integration of Renewable Energy Resources. The VSAC mainly depends on the corresponding dependencies of Voltage Stability Margins (VSMs) of load buses and preventive controls. Thus, this work aims to develop a generalized matrix, namely Bus Dependency Matrix (BDM), to reflect some system features for VSAC. The matrix is derived by performing sensitivity analysis on a VSM indicator with respect to preventive controls. The analysis is done via analytical derivation of the first and second-order derivatives of multi-bus power flow equations using Jacobian matrix data. The BDM represents the dependencies between network buses and shows how the control on each bus can affect the VSMs of system buses. The matrix elements are normalized, and thus they vary between 0 and 1. The computational efficiency of BDM is high and thus it can reflect the real-time system operation mode. The main applications of BDM are voltage stability control, clustering and network partition, and ancillary services. The proposed matrix is tested and verified on small and large-scale power networks under several scenarios.
