Unsteady matching of a twin-entry radial turbine with a diesel engine

Mahfoudh Cerdoun and Adel Ghenaiet

Energy, 2025, vol. 323, issue C

Abstract: Matching a radial inflow turbine with an internal combustion engine (ICE) while ensuring torque backup across a broad range of loads and speeds is a very complex task, considering the pulsating exhaust gas flows. This study aims to investigate the impacts of pulsating gas flows in a radial turbine with an asymmetric twin-entry volute, and the transient responsiveness of the turbocharger in terms of performance when matched with a diesel engine at different conditions. To achieve these goals, a 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and a 1-D Wave Dynamics Simulation (WDS) are implemented.
