Optimal planning and feasibility analysis of a grid-connected PV-biomass hybrid renewable energy system for rural electrification with electric vehicles: A case study of Hainan, China

Abstract:
Reliable, economical, and sustainable power supply is crucial for the long-term development of rural areas. Integrating local renewable energy resources is desirable for powering rural communities and reducing electricity bills, grid dependence, and emissions. However, scientific support for planning and applying a grid-connected hybrid renewable energy system (HRES), especially regarding grid reliability, system interactions, and the effects of grid limitations and policies, is lacking. In this study, we conducted an optimal planning and comprehensive feasibility analysis of a photovoltaic (PV)-biomass HRES with a grid connection for rural power supply and transportation electrification on a case study in China. The most cost-competitive architecture was identified using a hybrid optimization model for multiple energy resources. A sensitivity analysis was performed to reveal the impact of variations in external conditions and incentive policies on system configuration and cost while considering future load growth. The results indicated that compared with the complete grid-dependence scenario, the proposed on-grid PV-biomass HRES presented a levelized cost of energy (COE) reduction of 18.4 %, reflecting an annual CO2 reduction of 98,250 kg. In addition, the proposed HRES reduced grid dependence and offered broad capabilities in accommodating multiple scenarios, while promoting local sustainable development and decarbonization in both the energy and transport sectors.
