A case study of sustainable aviation fuel production from scrap tyres

Abstract: This research examined the transformation of scrap tyres (STs) gathered in Eskişehir province into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Scrap tyres underwent transformation into oil, char, and gas products through a fast pyrolysis process, subsequently enhanced by upgrading techniques such as catalytic cracking, alkylation, and hydrotreating, which encompasses hydrodearomatization, hydrodenitrogenation, and hydrodesulfurization of the tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO). It was concluded that approximately 843.41–853.130 tons per year of sustainable aviation fuel could be generated from 1817 tons per year of scrap tyres, with the hydrogen (H2) necessary for upgrading processes estimated at around 33.95–43.67 tons per year. The calculated minimum fuel selling price ranges from $1.467 to $1.541 per liter. The hydrogen utilized in the upgrading of tyre pyrolysis oil was generated through the electrochemical oxidation of tyre pyrolysis char (TPC). This study introduces a novel approach to hydrogen production by utilizing electrolysis on tyre pyrolysis char, a method not previously documented in the literature. The findings of the study are anticipated to provide guidance for individuals and institutions engaged in this field.
