Abstract: With the increasing adoption of heat pump systems in electric vehicles and residential buildings, the frequent on-off operation of the compressors, caused by variations in heating load and operating conditions, have adversely affected the system efficiency and user comfort. Linear compressors as a variable displacement compressor can easily adjust the output capacity by changing the compressor strokes, offering considerable merits on non-stop operation for long time partial load operation. However, the piston offset can limit the output capacity of the linear compressor. Thus, the effect of the piston offset control method on the heat pump system performance using linear compressor and R290 is evaluated based on a multifactor-coupled numerical model. The results indicated that the heat pump can reach a Coefficient of Performance close to 4.1 at an environmental temperature of −5 °C. The body pressure control method shows a higher system efficiency at high compressor capacity, while DC control method can achieve a higher system efficiency at low compressor capacity.
