Emergy evaluation of the tea-shiitake project in the mountainous region of central China

Abstract: Circular ecological planting offers promising prospects for sustainable agricultural development. This study examines the Tea-Shiitake Project (TSP), a representative circular agricultural model in the mountainous region of central China. The aim of this study is to integrate the tea with the shiitake, achieve the transformation from single planting to an integrated planting system, and realize the utilization of waste. This paper analysis the economic and ecological values of TSP by using the emergy theory and qualitative assessment. Based on data from Junwu Shiitake Technology Company in Tongbai Country, Henan Province. It was found that, the TSP achieved a profit of $14,114, highlighting its superior economic performance. Further emergy analysis reveals that the TSP has a lower Environmental Load Ratio (ELR: 0.44) and Emergy Self-sufficiency Ratio (ESR: 0.02), but a higher Emergy Sustainability Index (ESI: 2.49). These indicators collectively suggest improved environmental benefits and enhanced sustainability under the TSP model. The results proved that TSP not only bring high economic income, but also achieves environmental assessment. Emergy conclusion provides a scientific foundation and inspiration for local governments and enterprises to achieve green, sustainable development.
