Comparative evaluation of emissions, fuel consumption, and efficiency in PEMFC and diesel generators with hybrid system management

Abstract: The combustion of fossil fuels contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, impacting both the environment and public health. To address this challenge, adopting renewable and sustainable energy sources is a crucial strategy. This study investigates methanol as an alternative fuel in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) systems and evaluates its performance compared to diesel generators through experimental testing at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). The study examines efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions, while also integrating a hybrid energy system to reduce diesel dependency, lower operational costs, and minimize emissions. The results confirm the superiority of methanol, as the PEMFC maintains a stable efficiency of approximately 27 %, outperforming diesel generators across various load conditions. Additionally, the hybrid management system effectively reduces reliance on traditional fuel sources, demonstrating its potential to enhance sustainability and energy efficiency.
