The total energy cost of freight transport

Abstract: In this paper, we provide an estimate of the total energy required directly or indirectly to ship 1 ton of freight 1 mile by rail, domestic water, local and intercity trucks, and air. For rail freight, a careful review of previous studies resolves several apparent contradictions.
