Abstract:
This paper examines the economic benefits and optimal timing of new sources of electric energy. The focus is on those technologies that offer the promise of a nearly inexhaustible electric energy supply: the fast breeder reactor, solar electric and fusion. Benefits are calculated under varying assumptions regarding capital costs, development lead times, and resource availability. The interdependence between benefits from new technologies is also explored.
