Abstract:
Conceptual desigh studies of a small D-3He field-reversed mirror fusion plant are described. If achieved, the basic unit, termed SAFFIRE, would produce a few megawatts of power. By “stacking” of units, however, plants could be built in the 10s of megawatt size. This would make relatively clean fusion power available for applications requiring small, decentralized, power plants.
