Salinity power production in mechanochemical engines

Abstract:
The possibilities of constructing a mechanochemical engine for power production at river mouths are studied theoretically. The engine studied is a piston engine. It is shown that, if the water is exchanged by flushing parallell to the fibres, the cycle time must be greater than 30 sec. With flushing perpendicular to the fibres, a cycle time less than one second appears to be possible. The properties of a model fibre impermeable to ions are discussed. It is shown that an engine including such fibres can work reversibly between any two salinities. Finally, the possibilities of constructing such fibres are discussed.
