Validation methodology for solar heating and cooling systems

Abstract: The validation of solar heating and cooling computer programs is still in the early stages of development. Some work has been done in the area but much more is required before a level of confidence can be associated with the use of the programs. A validation methodology is proposed in this report which consists of 4 levels. The first deals with the validation of detailed simulation programs with respect to unmodeled parameters or phenomena. Level 2 addresses the inaccuracies introduced in simplified analysis procedures due to unmodeled parameter variation while level 3 deals with assessment of variation in results due to the field variation of modeled parameters. Level 4 provides a verification of the results of level 3 by comparison studies with field performance data. The result is a quantification of the level of confidence with which the simplified analysis program can be used.
