Abstract:
We have recently conducted several second law analyses, including one on a catalytic reformer and two on ethylene plants. This paper summarizes our results from these analyses and presents our conclusions regarding the use of second law analysis for energy conservation studies. First, the methodology we developed to perform a second law analysis is presented. Then, as an example, the lost work distribution in catalytic reforming is tabulated and discussed. Such tabulations spotlight the major contributors to inefficiency in a process (e.g. combustion steps). However, to date, no major inefficiency has been found that can be eliminated using today's technology.
