Abstract:
This paper presents a case study of an availability analysis of the solid waste recovery system in Ames, Iowa. Using this approach, the authors provide a more comprehensive way of characterizing the overall utilization of solid waste as a supplemental boiler fuel than does conventional energy accounting. Availability balances are applied to the processing plant, the steam generator, and the overall system. In each case, effectiveness parameters are defined that accurately assess the performance of corresponding systems.
