Development of hydro-power in Nigeria

Abstract:
About 90% of Nigeria's potential hydro sites remain undeveloped, 33% (~ 800 MW) of total power is currently generated by hydraulic turbines, the remaining 67% (~ 1732 MW) by thermoelectric generators. In 1985–1986, 68% (~ 3245 MW) will be generated by hydraulic turbines and the remaining 32% (~ 1516 MW) by thermoelectric generators. By 1995, the installed hydro capacity will increase from 3245 to 4895 MW (~ 45% of the total hydro-power potential). After 1995, development of 11 additional hydro sites will increase the generating capacity to 8185 MW (~ 86% of Nigeria's total hydro-power potential).
