Energy conservation in power plants: Analysis of pressure-equalizing pump performance

Energy, 1981, vol. 6, issue 6, 555-559
Abstract:
This analysis is a comparison of the performance differences between a pressure-equalizing pump and a conventional centrifugal boiler-feed pump in a typical steam-power plant, operating on a 60,000 kWe turbine-generator unit with throttle steam at 1350 psi and 950 °F. The purpose of this paper is to define the operating power required for a high-volume, high-pressure, high-speed, pressure-equalizing (P.E.) pump. This power is calculated to be 42 horsepower and should be compared with 854 horsepower for the centrifugal pump at the same condensate loading.
