The maximum power, heat demand and efficiency of a heat engine operating in steady state at less than Carnot efficiency

J.P. Howe

Energy, 1982, vol. 7, issue 4, 401-402

Abstract: An imperfect, Carnot-like engine operating in steady state and receiving heat through conductance k1 from a source at T1 and discharging heat only through a conductance k2 to a sink at T4 has an efficiency at maximum net power output of ηm = (ϵg9){1 − √(1 − ϱ(1 − T4T1)}, where ϵ is a non-Carnot efficiency and ϱ = (ϵk1 + k2)(k1 + k2).
