Abstract:
The projected increase in coal utilization in utility power plants makes it desirable to refine customary evaluations of coal which are based on the First Law of Thermodynamics. Presented in this paper is a Second Law or exergy analysis of Illinois No. 6 coal. A theoretical analysis is carried out and the quality of coal is calculated. The methodology, although applied to Illinois No. 6 coal, should be applicable to other coals or non-homogeneous fuels.
