An American energy future

Abstract: Starting from explicit value preferences, an energy system compatible with an alternative American future is outlined, based on efficient use of energy and renewable energy sources. It is demonstrated that the U.S. may become self-sufficient before 2000 and use only renewable energy by 2030. A plan for the smooth transition from the present to the alternative energy system is put forward and its economic implications are compared with the results of a less planned development. It is found that large efficiency improvements are economically advantageous, while the viability of renewable sources often depends on indirect economic considerations.
