Abstract:
A long-term comparison between ternary and binary units in pumped-storage powerplants is presented. We concentrate on technical and economic aspects relating to the efficiency of the storing cycle and the life expenditure of the machinery. Several scenarios of primary energy sources used in base-load electrical power generation are considered, and the corresponding marginal costs of the energy to be stored are taken into account. Our results agree with present industrial trends and also show that, in the future, wider use of nuclear power might reverse these trends.
