Energy efficiency of a lead smelter

D.R. Morris, F.R. Steward and P. Evans

Energy, 1983, vol. 8, issue 5, 337-349

Abstract: Exergy and enthalpy flows of an industrial lead smelter and sections of the plant comprising the smelter are presented. The chemical exergies of the elements and compounds were computed using, as datum levels, the concentrations of elements or compounds in atmospheric air or of ions in sea water. The ratio of exergy outflow to inflow is defined as the thermodynamic efficiency. The principal sources of exergy loss are identified. Recommendations for partial exergy recovery are made.
