Contingency planning in transportation

Abstract:
The Department of Defense's (DOD) Military Traffic Management Command is responsible for routing U.S. military traffic at home and abroad. Within the continental U.S., DOD relies almost solely on commercial transportation. DOD transportation resources support the civil transportation resources system in national security, life-saving, or other national emergencies. For fuel crises, a longer-range defense energy program is designed to lessen DOD's vulnerability to energy supply disruptions. DOD has contingency plans to keep military and commercial cargo and passengers moving.
