Bioenergetics of bullock power

A.R. Rao

Energy, 1984, vol. 9, issue 6, 541-543

Abstract: A pair of Haryana bullocks, by the age of three years, consume about 113 GJ (embodied energy) and need about 445 GJ more of feed during the next ten years of working life on the farm (maintenance energy). The scrap value of the bullocks utilized fully is about 15 GJ. Energy inputs into a pair of bullocks (1 hp) per working day on large farms (80 working days/yr) total 0.7 GJ and on small farms (176 working days/yr) 0.3 GJ. From the point of view of the total energy resources of the community, using bullocks is uneconomical.
