Leadership: A postindustrial approach
Joseph Rost and
Anthony Smith
European Management Journal, 1992, vol. 10, issue 2, 193-201
Abstract:
This article focuses on the nature of leadership. Joseph Rost and Anthony Smith expose the failure of the old, industrial view which emphasizes the peripheries of leadership. Instead, they propose a postindustrial concept which concentrates on a relationship of influence between leaders and followers who agree mutual purposes and really intend to carry them out. This process of leadership contrasts with the authority-oriented approach of our traditional understanding. The authors then trace practical steps necesssary to develop this model of postindustrial leadership, describe the five 'C's of credibility needed in a leader, and suggest strategies for making the change.
