Putting the organization on the analyst's couch

Yiannis Gabriel

European Management Journal, 1992, vol. 10, issue 3, 348-351

Abstract: In this personal view, the author highlights the extensive similarities between the role of the consultant and that of the psychoanalyst. Organizations, he argues, like individuals, can become neurotic by espousing corporate fantasies which, instead of offering relief, aggravate corporate malaise. Rational recipes for organizational recovery then become ineffective unless they are supported by a programme aimed at strengthening the organization's will to recover.
