How do you successfully adopt an advanced manufacturing technology?

Mark Frohlich

European Management Journal, 1998, vol. 16, issue 2, 151-159

Abstract: In the right context advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) can offer a telling competitive advantage. Unfortunately, many manufacturers that need to take advantage of AMTs are still struggling with their actual implementation. This article argues that organizations should employ different AMT implementation approaches based upon technological maturity. The focus of this study is on how manufacturers can successfully exploit distinct adoption strategies given that they are either early or late adopters of the AMT. Results suggest that early and late AMT adopters should concentrate on very different forms of learning designed to either clarify or confirm issues about the new technology.
