The single market effect: European standardization in theory and practice
Geoff Strawbridge
European Management Journal, 1990, vol. 8, issue 2, 174-185
Abstract:
Completion of the EC internal market is in full swing as the numerous measures identified in 1985 in Lord Cockfield's White Paper are progressively being adopted. There remains plenty of room for debate, however, about how the Single European Market will operate in practice. In particular, all kinds of popular assumptions exist on the subject of European standardization. For the past two years, Geoff Strawbridge has been exploring with a wide range of industrial and other audiences what in reality can be achieved by European standards and the methods and processes of preparing and implementing them. In this article he urges managers not so much to ask what the impact of 1992 will be, but to accept that they themselves bear the responsibility for determining how the rules of the Single Market should evolve in their sectors.
