Abstract: This article reviews the experience of a lifetime of working in the field of education and development. It covers encountering and researching gender bias and discrimination in education, education and development in applying research to World Bank operational practice, the inevitable move from research to management, teaching and other post retirement activities, and what I have learned that might be relevant to a new generation of "scholar-doers"
