Abstract:
Stakeholder engagement generates knowledge for value cocreation but is also indispensable for designing incentive-compatible environmental policies. The case study method helps to extend the current theory by critically analyzing various policy options in waste management. Thereafter, the resulting guidelines are applied to evaluate existing policies for drinks packaging and waste electrical and electronic equipment. The focus of these policies is innovations in the form of “Design for Environment.” These policies should help to reduce waste and improve the recyclability of waste equipment. It turns out that the careful integration of relevant stakeholders into the policies is of utmost importance, pointing to some value co-creation. The limitations of this approach arise from the dependence of the results on the concrete policy: each environmental area requires a somewhat different approach regarding the appropriate integration of stakeholders.
