Abstract: •Innovation positively affects entrepreneurial activity mainly in expansion phases.•Institutions positively affect economic growth and business activity in all periods.•The relationship between social climate and entrepreneurial activity is positive.•Institutions affect growth directly and indirectly through entrepreneurship.
