Abstract:
•Comparative case-study analysis of primary evidence of push and pull factors driving internationalisation by five African firms using a blended research approach.•The study tests for the conformity of the principal push and pull factors to established theory.•Push factors conform to theory, the most important being competitive advantage, stagnant home markets and firm growth.•New pull factors – network links and diaspora demand – are important along with host market growth and strategic asset acquisition.•No significant statistical differences are found between push and pull factors by firm, home country and sector.
