Configural analysis of GII’s internal structure

Tiffany Hui-Kuang Yu and Kun-Huang Huarng

Journal of Business Research, 2023, vol. 154, issue C

Abstract: The Global Innovation Index (GII) measures various aspects of the innovation ecosystem in countries and is widely used as the data source to analyze national innovation competence. While various studies work on different perspectives of GII, this study fills the research gap to focus on the elements of Innovation Input and Innovation Output. Through fuzzy sets/Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) analysis of multiple years of data, it identifies two types of solutions: a combination of all the antecedents except MS, and a combination of all antecedents for both outcomes, i.e., Knowledge and technology outputs (KTO) and Creative outputs (CO), respectively. The findings provide GII insights to justify the selection of the variables.
