•Positive Achievement Change Tool-Prescreen did not predict youth assault for the sample.•Positive Achievement Change Tool-Prescreen was more effective at predicting institutional danger than youth assault.•Positive Achievement Change Tool-Prescreen performed best for Whites than minorities for institutional danger.
