Abstract:
•Most sexual murderers used at least one forensic awareness strategies, while the majority of them used more strategies.•Differences in the use of forensic awareness strategies by sex offenders could be explained by the level of seriousness of the crime•Crime characteristics and expertise are the most important factors to explain the use of forensic awareness strategies by sexual murderers.•Situational characteristics do not have any impact to explain the use of forensic awareness strategies by sexual murderers.
