Abstract:
•This study assesses individual- and case-level factors that are associated with pretrial detention in New York City.•Using heterogeneous choice models, we examine whether offense type varies across boroughs of New York City.•Results reaffirm the importance of a number of legal and extra-legal factors, such as race, on pretrial detention.•Results also suggest that the effect of offense type on pretrial detention varies significantly between jurisdictions.
